PARAMETRIC DESIGN 101 WITH FUSION 360

  1. You open FUSION 360 and you start a Sketch.

03

  1. With FUSION 360, 3D objects start with a “SKETCH” made of 2D objects. Click on the icon with the green “+” on it.

03

  1. Select a plan for your “SKETCH”. The red and green segments are the “X” and “Y” axes.

03

  1. So you start by designing 2D shapes from primitive geometries (circles, rectangles, etc).

  2. Remember that your design will be fabricated on a machine later.

  3. You need to know the dimensions of the object you want to make.

03

  1. You add the dimensions of the object in your design.

  1. Now you can open the “Change Parameters Dialog Box”.

03

  1. From these recorded parameters (FUSION 360 does it automatically while you are drawing your shapes), you can make primitive 2D geometries vary according to your needs. Therefore, you can quickly adapt your design from a given material to another one, thiner, thicker, made to be 3D printed or milled on a CNC, etc.

  1. Now, you can “EXTRUDE” your 2D shapes into 3D shapes.

03

  1. You can also change the parameters on the 3D object itself, directly.

  1. After extruding your design, an “EXTRUDE” parameter appeared into the “Change Parameters” Dialog Box. You can also change this parameters to change the thickness of your material without having to redesign it entirely to meet different dimensions.
